Welcome to the Strategic Review consultation

The Commission’s funding is to reduce by 33% in real terms over the next four years – a reduction of around £8 million, likely to require us to lose 140 staff from our current total of 420. Clearly a very different approach is now needed - business as usual is simply not an option. Cuts at this level mean we cannot just keep going as we are. We have to draw up a whole new picture of what kind of a regulator the Commission should be in five years’ time, operating with significantly less resource.
This process, the strategic review, is likely to see the Commission changing quite significantly over coming years. We may have to withdraw services, change the way we interact with charities, even refocus our regulatory approach.

So it’s vital that the changes are informed by a wide range of stakeholders. Whether you are a charity trustee, a professional adviser working with charities, the beneficiary of a charity, or an interested citizen: your thoughts are important to us and we want to hear from you.

We know you are busy so there are three different ways to take part - find out more on the page ‘Having your say'.

This is the first stage of our review, and there will be further opportunities to contribute as we develop our thinking and begin to focus on more detailed and practical questions – so please watch this space.

We hope you will take this opportunity to have your say about the future of the Charity Commission, and thank you for your time and thoughts.

  1. Having read the series of comments to the topics I cannot see how the CC will arrive at an informed and balanced view on how to achieve a 33% reduction unless perhaps part of the purpose of the exercise is to demonstate that the CC cannot. Excessive bureaucracy and lack of focussed priorities need to be corrected.

  2. Please be honest as the strategic review is really a tactical review imho.
